THE DROP.

Pedro Santos – Krishnanda (Mr.Bongo) $40
Krishnanda is an album in the truest sense of the word – a spiritual, psychedelic Brazilian masterpiece from start to finish – celebrated by everyone from Seu Jorge and Kassin to Floating Points, Madlib and DJ Nuts. Produced by the artist himself in the CBS studio with arrangements Joppa Lins (codenamed Pacheco Lins) and the endorsement of Hélcio Milito (then in the position of Production Director of the label), Krishnanda is a pearl of MPB and features poetic lyrics mystical perspective under a different linguistic structure. The sound diversity of the album is very large, there are many types of percursivos instruments, horn arrangements from samba rhythms and Latin and Eastern almost the same time, animal sounds and ambience of a forest, a psychedelic organ, a guitar with similar to a zither, xylophones and instruments designed and built by Peter pródrio sorongo timbre

Willie Hutch – Soul Portrait (Be With) $40
Willie Hutch enjoyed more than a dozen R&B chart hits throughout the 1970s during his time with Motown Records, where, as well as being the studio talent behind albums by Smokey Robinson (producing solo LPs ‘Smokey’ and ‘Pure Smokey’) and Michael Jackson ( Got To Be There LP) and tracks by Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross he also gained acclaim with his music scores for the soundtracks of Blaxploitation movies including The Mack and Foxy Brown ; music which certainly inspired the hip-hop generation. Before Motown, Willie worked with the 5th Dimension, then he launched his own solo career in 1969 with debut LP ‘Soul Portrait’ on RCA.

V/A – Surinam Funk Force (Rush Hour) $38
Back in 2012, Rush Hour boss Antal Heitlager put together a sublime collection of obscure Surinamese disco and boogie for sister label Kindred Spirits. Four years on, and with assistance from Thomas Gesthuizen, he presents the follow-up, Surinam Funk Force. Predictably, it’s another fine set full of surprise gems and barely-known classics. While some tracks sound authentically American (see the deep and harmonious brilliance of Steve Watson’s “Born To Boogie”, and Surinam scene stalwart Sumy’s eccentric, synth-laden “The Funky ‘G’ (Only Comes At Night)”, some of the most potent cuts lean more heavily on traditional Surinamese music. In this camp you’ll find the thrilling funk of Explosion’s “Wakka Mang”, and the off-kilter tropical disco-funk of Ronald Snijders’ “Kaseko Attack”.

Anderson Paak – Venice (Empire) $45
Anderson Paak is the next R&B virtuoso on the verge of blowing up. His eclectic style, songwriting abilities and musical chops allow him to effortlessly blend genres borrowing from hip-hop, alt-rock, r&b, jazz, and electronic. Album features” TokiMonsta, Ta-Ku, Lo-Def and more.

Sputnik Quadrant- Edits From… (Rhythm Section International) $25
The second release from the mysterious ‘Edits From’ Series. Tripped out, West African-inspired afro-cosmic rhythms to freak you out. Don’t sleep on this if part 1 is anything to go by!

* 3rd Generation Band – Obi Ye Saa Wui (Mr.Bongo) $18
The 3rd Generation band was formed in the late 70’s led by ‘Rockson’, who was a soldier at the time. The band recorded only six tracks, all for Essiebons, including the two featured here ‘Because of Money’ and ‘Obi Ye Saa Wui’.
‘Because of Money’ was originally released on Essiebons – EB 398 7” and was featured on Soundway’s excellent ‘Ghana Soundz’ compilation. The record is extremely rare..this reissue is a replica 7”, including the picture paper sleeve.

* Dayme Arocena – Nueva Era (Brownswood) $40
At just 22 years old, Daymé – a singer, arranger composer, and choir director is already a veteran presence in Cuban music, and is fast gaining international profile. She says she has sung all her life and recalls her four-year old self performing on every block in her neighborhood. She has been performing semi-professionally since the age of eight, and became lead singer with the big band Los Primos at 14. She has performed with Winton Marsalis, and was invited by the Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnet to perform in Canada. Daymé first came to the attention of François Renié, Communications Director at Cuban rum maker Havana Club and founder of the Havana Cultura platform. He recalls “Gilles and I met Dayme for the first time on Gilles’ first trip to Cuba, improvising a rumba session at a friends place. She started to sing and we were amazed. She was just a teenager”. Considered to young to appear on the early Havana Cultura recordings, she nonetheless stayed on Gilles’ radar on his subsequent trips to Cuba. Gilles recalls “I was knocked out at her professionalism and people connection. She is so many things – a serious artist who knows exactly what she wants musically.
