Its the Joint
I love you Mary Jane. Funky 4 + 1 meets B-real! YES! We are live with Drop number … 23? 15.. who knows, what I can say is this one is solider than a lump of something very solid.

Theres a gargantuan motherlode.. largesseness, of Jazz. Really good stuff. Check the Herbie & Coltrane sections.. that Pharoah LP! mmhmm… But then the Hip Hop & Soul List have some sweet moments on them too.. Oh the afro Latin & reggae Heat! Triston Palma, Light Of Saba, Lafayette afro rock..

Then you hit the new LPs.. This section represents a hell of a lot of work, tracking down records like Massive attacks Mezzanine, Anderson Paaks Malibu, The Avalanches Since I left You.. Theres some tasty things in there, requires attention!

On the 7″ level a small but nice selection of original Ethio / Afro Jazz Funk titles are in this time.. Also not typed up as much but still dropping, a little bunch of 80s boogie funk 7″ & again another 100 or more 12″ disco titles will be added to the growing section.

ok thats all the waffling for now, remember we can ship as many records as u want for $10 Australia wide.

THE DROP.

Maki Asakawa – Maki Asakawa (Honest Jon’s) $35
Enchanting introduction to the exquisite, smoky melancholy of a Japanese jazz and blues singer/songwriter/composer who collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto and penned some 30 solo albums, yet is scarcely known in the West.
Born 1942 in a small, northern Japanese fishing village, Maki grew up during the era of American occupation and cultural imperialism, eventually moving to Tokyo and nurturing a passion for the records of Billie Holliday and Mahalia Jackson, which would lead her to perform on US military bases and cabarets and subsequently cover many US traditional folk and blues for the Japanese market.
With her distinctive, husky croon, aching songs and head-to-toe black outfits, she’s seemingly possessed by the spirit of her heroes – Billie, Nina, Mahlia among them – and apparently had the mysterious countenance to match her unusual aesthetic.
We’ll have to take that for granted from Hitoshi Jin Tamura’s photos and Alan Cummings’ enlightening liner notes, but Maki’s music remains the best gauge of her character, taking in big band experiments along with an amazing, sitar-lead psych-out, plus runs into modal, spiritual jazz and the kind of lounge styles that prompt imagery of Bill Murray or some lonely salaryman clutching a single malt in the shadows of a Tokyo bar..

Amanaz – Africa (Now Again) $48
Issued in 1975, this is the articulation of Zambia’s Zamrock ethos. While other albums – Rikki Ililonga’s Zambia, WITCH’s Lazy Bones!! – are competitors, it’s hard to best this album as it covers each major quadrant of the Zamrock whole: it came from the mines; its musicians were anti-colonial freedom fighters, it envelops Zambian folk music traditions, and it rocks – hard.
Africa was issued in two separate mixes and two separate presses in 1975: one version is dry, with the vocals and drums mixed loud, the other slathered in reverb, with the vocals and drums disappearing into the mix, and with the guitar solos mixed much louder. Africa’s master tapes are long lost, but we have restored both versions in new transfers from the absolute cleanest copies of this incredibly rare album and presented them both in a 2 LP set. Also included, an extensive booklet containing an essay on the album and detailing the history of the Zamrock scene and this album, with notes from Amanaz’s Isaac Mpofu and Keith Kabwe and rare photos. Download card included with LP version.

Orchestra of Spheres – Brothers & Sisters of the Black Lagoon (Fire) $35
Born out of Wellington’s fertile creative music scene, their members have names like Mos Iocos, EtonalE and Baba Rossa.. Woild Boin bangs the drums, except he doesn’t in the studio – that’s someone or something called Tooth…
Their influences range, they say, from kuduro and “psychedelic primary school disco” to kwaito, free improv, shangaan electro, inner brain clap and funk puppetré. Really, though, think a lo-fi Heads with a shoestring budget and the no-limits creativity often borne of penury. They’ve been called “futuristic and unsettlingly primal” and “the most out-of-this-world band in music today”. Even Dan Snaith of Caribou has been singing the praises of their music “Part Sun Ra otherworldiness, part Sublime Frequencies and part ESG … Orchestra of Spheres blew us away”
Which, they admit, offers the sort of escapist fantasy-funk you’d want in “dark times … of remote war, mass deceit and money worship”.

Mary Afi Usuah – Ekpenyong Abasi (Voodoo Funk) $30
A stupendous blend of scintillating highlife, smoking Fela and spaced-out, funkdafied Black Jazz, from 1975 — Mari Affiong Usuah from Oron town, by way of Calabar in southeastern Nigeria, fronting a knockout band led by Daniel ‘Satch’ Asuquo from the Atomic 8 (and formerly of Bobby Benson’s orchestra).

The Afrofunk cuts are especially killer — with James Brown just percolating through by the end — but it’s a stunning, magnificent album, through and through. Beautifully sleeved, too, with excellent notes by Uchenna from Comb & Razor.

Anderson.Paak – Malibu (Steel Wool) $45
Anderson. Paak needed solutions. The California native saw both of his parents and stepfather sent to prison by the time he was 18, and earlier in his adult life, he, his wife, and his son endured homelessness after he was unexpectedly let go from his job at a Santa Barbara marijuana farm. “When I look at my tree, I see leaves missing, generations of harsh living, and addiction,” he sings in his old-soul rasp on Malibu, his second album as Anderson .Paak.
He’s faced uncertainty as a musician, too, but after “Suede”, a song he recorded with beatmaker Knxwledge under the name NxWorries, caught Dr. Dre’s ear, .Paak became a significant part of Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre, making six appearances on the album. Not surprisingly, those songs combined for .Paak’s big break, and now, eight years after deciding he wanted to make music his livelihood, he’s released his best project yet, an affecting album that masterfully marries hip-hop, R&B, and soul.
