Soul music is one of America's greatest inventions. We know this is a bold claim, but it’s one of the few genres that can be a consistent source of pleasure—at least that’s how we think about it.

Kings Go Forth, though they were a part of a soul revival, had their own unique approach. They were an unlikely and kismet collaboration between producer Andy Noble—owner of Lotus Land Records and general man about town—and the singer Black Wolf, whose bona fides dated back to the regional soul act the Essentials (they were on Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom Records in the ’70s). Together with their 10-member, intergenerational soul band, they perfected complex grooves that elegantly highlighted Black Wolf’s high-flying vocals—borrowing from the past to make the soul music of the future.
