1LP Vinyl – SRLP 021

A cracker of a Latin set from the end of the 60s – one originally issued in Venezuela, but done with all the hard, soulful styles of the New York scene of the time! Ray Perez has a very sharp, tight combo here – one that can pull out a heavy bassline when needed, or hit the piano with a soul jazz flourish at other times – and the group have definitely inherited that Joe Cuba small combo mode that really set the Latin world on fire before the boogaloo came on! Rhythms include a few more South American-styled modes, but still handled with that soulful vibe – and titles include "El Nino Del Trombon", "Emae Mae", "El Mundo Esta Lleno", "Asi Mueren Los Valientes", "El Alacran", "Mango Maduro", and "Los Lios De Mis Suegros".
