1LP Vinyl – SUNSPLP006

Sister Big Stuff, originally released by Melodisc in the UK in 1972, found Buster aiming at his skinhead fans with a selection of covers and the one saucy lyric. But this isn’t ska: the rhythms are early 70s, with chunky guitars and nothing in a rush. Jean Knight’s Mr Big Stuff is remade from the masculine viewpoint with strings and brass; Protection finds Buster in wise crooner style; Bridge Over Troubled Water is better than you’d imagine, at least until the chorus (the best reggae version is by saxman Im for Studio One); Shep & The Limelites’/John Holt’s Stick By Me is also on offer.
