The short-lived disco dectet (!) Stars released 'Dancin' People' in 1981, and was it a stomper! A load-bearing prototype of hi-NRG wonk and wide berthed bass, this once history-book evading group – a revolving cast of characters centred on producer and instrumentalist Ray Cadle – benefited hugely from their many-strong membership. The song's comped, choral vocals tremolo with continuous lung force, as a mellow electric melody moves stepwise over the scale, and a group prayer is repeated: "let's keep on dancin'… we're the stars of the night!" Controlled chaos ensues, leaving our scalps raw with scratch marks: why didn't these guys break through and out of their native New York?
