Hello!
Another fortnight down, another huge drop to keep your ears happy and your crates full. This one’s really a goodie.

It’s a unanimous top picks from the Pluggy team for this week: Ruby Rushton’s ‘Joy For Two’ and ‘Trudi’s Songbook’. Be quick though, they’re flying out the door. Plenty of other heat on the reissue front too, look it for that Digable Planets gold!

As per usual the seconds crates are jam packed with OGs – a pretty impressive collection of jazz and rock in particular. Don’t sleep on Idris Muhammad, Herbie or those Miles Davis titles.

You know where we are, come through for a visit and get your fingers dusty!

NEW THINGS
Ruby Rushton – Trudi’s Songbook (22a) $35
When 22a released the debut album from four-piece Ruby Rushton back in 2015, few of those involved were particularly well known. Now, of course, it’s a different story. Led by saxophone and flute-wielding Ed Cawthorne (AKA Tenderlonious) and featuring drums by Yussef Dayes (one half of Yussef Kamal), the band looks set for a major breakthrough. “Trudy’s Songbook: Volume 1” is an effortlessly summery and organic affair that stylishly shuffles between tracks that meld elements of spiritual jazz, soul, hip-hop, salsa, Afro-jazz and freestyle improvisation. It’s hugely entertaining, impeccably produced and brilliantly played. You can bet your bottom dollar that Gilles Peterson is a fan, and you should be, too.

Ruby Rushton – Two For Joy (22a) $35
Ruby Rushton’s debut album “Two For Joy” was recorded in 2011 – deeply personal instrumental compositions fuelled by a love of Coltrane, Yusef Lateef and Fela Kuti to more contemporary artists like Slum Village and Sa-Ra. The four-piece are led by Ed Cawthorne (aka Tenderlonious) who plays saxophone, flute and percussion alongside drummer Yussef Dayes, trumpeter Nick Walters and keyboard player Aidan Shepherd.

Tenderlonious & Dennis Ayler – 8R1CK C17Y (22a) $35
Tenderlonious lays down his flute for this LP and goes back to the MPC,with help from the illusive Dennis Ayler. Comprised of ten cuts ‘Brick City’ takes the listener on a journey through Afro-House, Funk, Jazz, Rare Groove, Boogie and Broken Beat – something for everyone here! “Brick City (4am)” and “Butterfly” groove effortlessly whilst synth leads interject over tasty chords, all the while being supported by solid bass lines – these two will undoubtedly set a strong pace on the dancefloor. ‘Funky Booda’ does exactly what it says on the tin, it’s a straight Funk classic! Its infectious groove and soaring leads are sure to have you clapping your hands and stomping your feet. ‘Be Ur Friend’ is a fiery Afro-House number – reminiscent of one of Tenderlonious’s early releases ‘Bob’s Riddim.’ There’s also more hip-hop inspired selections like ‘Brick City (4pm)’ or ‘Pepe’s Walk,’ which bump hard and have strong traces of Sa-Ra and J Dilla influence. The record comes complete with quirky skits like ‘Bootsy’ and ‘Ferndale Gateaux,’ which blend in and out between the other tunes allowing the record to flow effortlessly from beginning to end. There is something for everyone on this album. It’s the kind of record you can play at home from start to finish or take out to the club as an essential dancefloor filler.

Digable Planet – Blowout Comb (Modern Classics) $45
First ever vinyl re-issue of the stone cold classic LP from Digable Planets. An album as diverse and vibrant as their home borough of Brooklyn, the music is a blend of jazz and hip-hop and effortlessly mixes live instruments with samples. After the resounding commercial success of their first LP, this is Digable Planets demonstrating their artistic prowess. Embossed sleeve, and fold out poster along with sleeves notes by Larry Mizelle Jr.

Supreme Jubilees – It’ll All Be Over (LITA) $40
With roots as a gospel quartet, The Supreme Jubilees (headed by brothers Joe and David Kingsby) self-released their debut album in 1979. With only 500 copies pressed, it’s been in demand by enthusiasts ever since. Check this immaculately remastered release and it’s easy to see why as the band flex from classic, feel-good gospel “I Am On The Lord’s Side” to the silky, honey-toned emphatic soul of “You Don’t Know” via stomping, clam-tight funk jams such as “Stop Today”. Truly timeless.

Dave Gold Big Band – Heaven On Their Minds (My Only Desire) $35
Recorded for the BBC Radio 2 Jazz Club Show in August ’74, ‘Heaven On Their Minds’ features 4 jazzy big band tunes including bright grooves ‘Pocketful Of Keys’ and ‘Heaven On Their Minds’. The band features some of the UK’s finest Jazz session guys including saxophonist Ronnie Ross on baritone. Previously unreleased these library style tunes are a delight. Strictly limited 500 vinyl press.

Free-Son – Banguele (Groovie) $40
It does not get much better than this. A much needed re-issue of Free-Son’s super-rare and very expensive 1971 Brazilian psychedelic instrumental funk masterpiece. Includes a cut which may very well have been the inspiration for Afefe Iku’s classic ‘Mirror Dance’

Idris Muhammad – Could Heaven BE Like This 12” (Kudu/Sony) $25
Idris Muhammed’s much-played, much-sampled and much re-edited 1977 jazz-funk meets disco jam “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This” is one of those records that should be everyone’s collection. A staple of both soul and disco sets, it’s about as spiritual as disco gets, with dreamy vocals and parping horns riding a delicious groove. If it’s missing from your collection, this repress – featuring the same B-sides from the original Kudu release – should be an essential purchase. Those B-sides – the electric guitar-laden swing of “Tasty Cakes” and, in particular, “Turn This Mutha Out” – a low-slung skip through deep disco-funk pastures – are similarly impressive.
