Hi Folks,
Welcome to our latest list, kicking off winter of 2017 with another magical journey to record land.. or putting it simply, a great big list of really good records.

In the Originals section we have heavy hitters in every genre.. Theres some great Japanese LPs, just a small selection at present, maybe 20-30 LPs but some really nice stuff. The Jazz & Hip Hop are firing, as is the rock section.. As usual I wont say much as Im sure your reading the list and not this anyway… But if you are.. well just read the list.. its kinda good.

In the new section we really went all out this time, its seriously large & has some great stuff from Pressure Sounds, Soul Jazz, Mr Bongo, Ace & BGP, LITA, Big Crown & a whole bunch of other random labels..

You need to come in and check it all out, typing just doesn’t convey the picture

THE DROP

V/A – Lovin’ Mighty Fire: Nippin Funk Soul Disco 73-83 (BGP)
Japan has long been known as the final destination for many a collectible soul record. Yet, who suspected that some fine soul grooves were recorded for the domestic market, from ballads, to funk and disco Strangely enough, some of the busiest writers and producers in this field came from a late 60s rock band, Happy End, but on listening to their collaborations, their rhythmic, soulful feel is immediately apparent.

The bluesy funk of Lily, the soul-diva brilliance of Minako Yoshida – represented here in both slow-grind mode and epic disco, the maverick genius of Haruomi Hosono, the lively songstress Yasuko Agawa, and the sultry steaminess of Mari Natsuki, and more. This album finally plants a Japanese flag firmly on the global map of soul.

V/A – The Original Sound of Mali (Mr Bongo)
Killer comp showcasing the rich history of musical innovation from Mali – arguably the most sophiscated form of African music. Vik Sohonie & Dave Buttle have put together a collection of tracks from across the country steeped in Malian culture, and, in particular, the immense hypnotic beauty of Malian music. Featuring Malian musical legends such as Sory Bamba, Rail Band, Mory Kante and Salif Keita, as well as lesser known gems from Idrissa Soumaoro et L’Eclipse de L’Ija. Absolutely essential compilation from Mr Bongo!

SOUL JAZZ RECORDS Reissue 5 out of print titles & a new one from the Skatalites!!!

V/A – Studio One Groups (Soul Jazz)
Studio One Groups is the latest Soul Jazz/Studio One Records release featuring legendary groups from the foundation label of Reggae. Bob Marley and The Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, The Heptones –just three of Reggae’s greatest groups who all started at Clement Dodd’s Studio One Records, “ The University of Reggae”.
Studio One Groups brings together classic artists alongside lesser-known artists and covers Studio One’s musical output from the 1960s and 70s featuring Ska, Roots, Rocksteady, Dub and more. Clement Dodd’s role in launching and nurturing Reggae groups/singers is unsurpassed. Launching Bob Marley and The Wailers career also meant that Dodd both housed Marley in a flat at Studio One, and employed him to check new American 45s that came out for Studio One artists to cover.

* V/A – Studio One Scorchers (Soul Jazz)
Heavy, heavy tunes! Studio One instrumentals are the foundation of Reggae. These rhythm tracks became the basis for all Dancehall as countless artists and producers re-versioned these classic Studio One instrumentals.

* V/A – Studio One Soul 2 (Soul Jazz)
Studio One Soul 2 is the long awaited second volume of one of the largest selling Soul Jazz/Studio One titles, Studio One Soul.
Studio One Soul 2 takes us further into Jamaican music’s fascination with American Soul and Funk music. Featuring a host of classic Reggae artists – Horace Andy, The Heptones, Ken Boothe, Jackie Mittoo, Jacob Miller and many more covering equally classic American Soul and Funk tunes by the likes of Curtis Mayfield, The Five Stairsteps, Marvin Gaye, The Stylistics, Lee Dorsey, Al Green and Syl Johnson.

* V/A – Studio One Kings (Soul Jazz)
Studio One’s list of singers launched at the famous label reads like a roll call of Jamaican music. Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne and more. This album features classic and rare tracks that span the breadth of the legendary Studio One catalogue: Ska, Roots, Rocksteady, Lovers and more from the 1960s and 70s.

* V/A – Sound Dimension Mojo Rocksteady Beat (Soul Jazz)
Sound Dimension have recorded some of the most important songs in reggae music; songs such as ‘Real Rock,’ ‘Drum Song,’ ‘Heavy Rock,’ ‘Rockfort Rock,’ ‘In Cold Blood’ — all classic songs that have become the ‘foundation’ of reggae music, endlessly versioned and re-versioned by Jamaican artists since the time they were first recorded to the present day. As the in-house band at Studio One in the late 1960s, Sound Dimension played alongside everyone from The Heptones, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths and more.

The Skatalites – S/T (Soul Jazz)
Fantastic new collection of rare and classic killer ska from the legendary Skatalites, one of the most important groups in the history of Reggae.
This album was first released only as a limited-edition  collectors 7-inch box set (now deleted) and is now available for the first time as a double LP edition
The Skatalites brought the sound of Jamaica to the world. At the start of the 1960s, in the space of just a couple of years Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Ernest Ranglin, Johnny ‘Dizzy’ Moore, Lloyd Knibbs, Lloyd Brevett and others defined the exciting beat of ‘Ska’ as the sound of newly independent Jamaica.

Johnny Hammond – Gears
Classic jazz funk album from the legendary Johnny ‘Hammond’ Smith with a special version with six previously unissued bonus out-takes. Released in 1975 and his 32nd long player, it heralded a fresh chapter in his career that saw him exploring more electronic instrumentation and deeper shades of funk in a similar way to Roy Ayers or Bob James. The result was a timeless document that carries motifs of many of today’s artists; the harmonies of “Can’t We Smile?”, for instance, smack of Plantlife while the punctuated piano work and mirrored squiggling synths on “Song For The Family” echoes with Flying Lotus-style whim. Also a key source of breaks for many junglists, Gears is a historic document that’s not only played a strong role in electronic music but still sounds incredible today.
