TO THE DROP..
Air – S/T (Be With) $42
Long Island’s AIR only made one album. As solitary statements go, it’s exceptional. Divinely elevated by Googie Coppola’s beautiful voice, this transcendent masterpiece of soulful jazz-rock fusion has become increasingly tricky to track down. 45 years on from its initial release, Be With Records finally make it available again on vinyl.
Funk Factory – S/T (Be With) $40
An exquisite slice of psychedelic jazz-funk, Funk Factory was criminally overlooked upon release but became a crate-diggers classic over time. The entire album represents a space-aged opus, featuring tripped-out keys, tight drums and baked synths; all laced by Urszula Dudziak’s ethereal vocals drifting around the exceptional instrumentation
The Avalanches – Wildflower (Modular/XL) $45
The Avalanches return after 15 years with their long-awaited second album and it’s impressive!
V/A – Coxsone’s Music 2: The Sound of Young Jamaica (Soul Jazz) $45
These recordings were made when Sir Coxsone ruled the dancehalls of Kingston in the late 1950s and early 1960s with his number one Downbeat Sound System, where songs were tested out on dub plates at a dance to see a crowd’s reaction – the most popular of which were then released commercially.
Featuring early material by Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook (all of whom would form The Skatalites), Toots and The Maytals, young singers such as Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson, Owen Gray all captured in their formative days.
V/A – Nigeria 70 Lagos Jump (Strut) $50
Back in 2001, the first edition of Nigeria 70 on Strut broke the mould for African compilations, featuring a wide spectrum of musical styles from across the 1970’s, and an audio documentary tracing the music’s history. In this edition, Strut delve deeper into the Lagos underground for another box of essential West African dynamite. From the heavy jazz of Peter King to Bola Johnson’s scratchy afro funk and the rolling grooves of Juju legend Sir Shina Peters, this is some of the best music ever to emerge from Africa during the seventies. Compiled by leading afro archivist Duncan Brooker and Strut’s Quinton Scott. Check!
* V/A – Venezuela 70 (Soul Jazz) $40
Most of the artists featured on Venezuela 70 remain practically unknown outside of Venezuela’s borders and yet their progressive forward-thinking music is some of the most sophisticated in the world – a stunning ‘melting pot’ mix of underground rock, synthetic electronics, funk, jazz and Latin American rhythms all of which explored new sounds and broke down musical boundaries to create a distinct and unique Venezuelan music and cultural identity.
