Howdy All,
Once again, welcome to the largeness that follows. With the second drop of Winter 2017 we present a fat packet of music sourced from the four corners.

Here, we are mining the high water mark of 2 overseas digging trips & a huge European order of incredible new records. This selection represents the tip of whats to come over the next few months.

Heavy on original Jazz, Roots Reggae, Soul, Blues, Latin, Hip Hop, Japanese, House & Rock LP’s.. this drop has it all. Without sounding too blah blah, thats just the way we feel.

& that doesn’t touch on the massive load of new stuff that just landed this afternoon from Honest Jons, BGP, Matsuli Music, MFM, Soul Jazz, AOTN, Be With. Big cuts from Don Blackman, Pecker Power, Jackie Mittoo, Tewolde Redda, Johnny Hammond & all that..

As usual this little blurb feels superfluous, not doing any justice whatsoever to the huge amount of heat in the grooves of the following list, so we’ll just leave you with it. Good Luck & take your time..

Just come visit.

Remember call us to get in first & buy over phone &/or send us a message if you want to reserve stuff.

Remember $10 shipping for a many records as you want Australia wide.

THE DROP

V/A – Boombox 2 (Soul Jazz)
Soul Jazz Records’ new Boombox 2 is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979-83, with barely a household name in sight. This shit is illin… seriously unless you ned the orginal 12’s Get this! We should know, 80s Rap ain’t easy to come by, at least the cuts on this bomb.. Featured here are some the earliest hip-hop records that came out of New York City following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘Rapper’s Delight’ by the Sugarhill Gang, in September 1979. Boombox 2 tells the story of how hip-hop went from its evolutionary roots in the Bronx through DJs Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa through to this second phase where veteran music producers – Paul Winley, Peter Brown, Joe Robinson and others – all based in Harlem, began to put rap on vinyl for the first time. The album features many early and rare cuts from the first generation of early rap artists including Lovebug Starski (as Little Starsky), Busy Bee, Eddie Cheba, Kool DJ AJ as well as many other little known artists.

* Don Blackman – Blackman (Expansion)
All time Funk, Jazz, Soul, Fusion Classic. This record is an essential part of any soulful collection. One of the best representations of dancefloor funk to hit any needle, on any turntable, anywhere. Sounds big, cause it is. Don Blackman with his team of crack session players team up on this one to deliver the funk. Find out if you don’t already know.

* V/A – Soul Sega Sa! (Le Disque Bongo Joe)
In the 17th century, slaves were deported from Africa, Madagascar and the pristine islands of Mauritius, Réunion and the Seychelles in the South Western corner of the Indian Ocean to work on coffee and sugar cane plantations. They gathered secretly to escape their daily woes by singing, dancing and beating rhythms. This gave birth to the Afro-Malagasy-inspired sega music. During the course of the 19th century, the Creole population’s gradual adoption of Western instruments and traditional melodies of old Europe (quadrille, waltz, polka, schottische, romance, mazurka) together with the cultural impact of hired workers from India, laid the foundation for contemporary sega. This crossroads of influences kept expanding, especially in the 50s, when the first gramophones hit the market and all sorts of records were played, from pop to jazz, soul, rock and roll, and even Cuban and Brazilian music. For sega music, this hailed the beginning of an intense period of creativity which would linger on into the ’60s and ’70s when amplified instruments appeared and violins and accordions were replaced by electric guitars, bass guitars, drums and keyboards. Record production boomed, an abundance of micro-record labels emerged and immensely talented arrangers honed their skills. These included Marclaine Antoine, Gerard Cimiotti, Eric Nelson, Claude Vinh San and Narmine Ducap, who went on to explore the many facets of sega. Psychedelic keyboards, fuzz guitars and bouncy bass lines came to complement the manic ternary polyrhythms of drums, ravannes, bongos, claves, triangles and maracas, and created a unique style. FolkWelt and Bongo Joe Records have carefully selected and compiled some gems from this golden age of sega from Mauritius, the Seychelles and Reunion

* Pecker – Pecker Power (Rush Hour)
Cosmic Dub Reggae out of Japan, but out of Jamaica. This classic recorded with an all star Jamaican lineup in Kingston in the mid 70’s. Mostly members of the Wailers band, led by Pecker and other Japanese & Jamaican luminaries such as Minako Yoshida, Augustus Pablo, Sly & Robbie.. Enough said. This is a crossover record worth crossing over for. Hits all the right buttons.

* Emmanuelle Parrenin – Maison Rose (Souffle Continu)
Cited as a French peer to the likes of Sandy Denny, Emmanuelle Parrenin was a part of France’s folk revival of the late 1960s, recording eight albums in the lead up to Maison Rose, her final long-player, released in 1976. Far from restricting itself to a conventional set of acoustic songs, Maison Rose is indebted to experimental digressions: while pieces such as ‘Plume Blanche, Plume Noire’ depict Parrenin as a considerable talent (with a strikingly pure, unearthly vocal tone) when tackling a jazzy variant on traditional folk, she’s equally inclined to drop a new-agey, almost ambient, modal piece like ‘Liturgie’ or even a strange electronic beat-scape like ‘Topaze’ – which takes an almost hip-hop like approach to tape editing.

* Tewolde Redda – Eritrea’s Guitar Power (Domino Sound)
This album includes songs that are all responsible for revolutionizing traditional Eritrean music, with innovative use of amplified kirar, electric guitar and horns – as thoroughly outlined in the accompanying 6-page booklet. It also contains the first Eritrean songs to ever use a horn section! It’s almost certain that – with few exceptions – you’ve never heard these tracks before, or even the sound of traditional Eritrean music, so it’s a real ear opener and education for a start. One which really gives a flavour of life in the now secretive and permanently war-footed East African country through its charmingly loping rhythms and intricate folk melodies, see-sawing between sombre and joyous with occasional really beguiling turns of phrase that we’ve never really heard in any other style that’s crossed these pages! Comes in a “tip-on” sleeve with extensive liner notes, lyrical translations, and unpublished photos. A co-release with Mitmitta Musika of Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.

* Lord Tanamo – Keep On Moving 7” (Soul Jazz)
Big cut on this one, part of the recent 5 x 7” release on Soul Jazz with some really heavyweight Studio 1 rarities. Lord Tanamo letting loose over Jackie Mittoo’s ‘Totally Together” Rhythm. Necessary.
