THE DROP
Jah Wobble – The Lago Years
Fans of Jah Wobble, the absurd, well curated selection of Jah Wobble masterpieces. Emotional Rescue shed light on a less documented period of his epic biography: his years as label chief of Lago records. Drawing on recordings made between 1981 and 1985, The Lago Years is a captivating listen that touches on post punk and no wave all the way through to dreamy psychedelia and the kind of world music Wobble would become so well known for later on in his career. An essential collection for any lovers of leftfield music and mysticism.
Jorge Reyes & Antonio Zepeda – A La Izquierda Del Colibri
Another long awaited reissue from the Emotional Rescue team, this one a powerful experimental LP to take you on a real journey. The late Jorge Reyes was a leading figure in Mexican experimental music, and this album recorded with Antonio Zepeda is one of his earliest and most striking works. Originally released in 1986, A La Izquierda Del Colibri is a worldly product of the era in the same way as the work of Jah Wobble and Brian Eno, rich in new wave funk but reaching to a higher plane thanks to all manner of sonic devices. From treated jungle sounds to swooping pads, the whole album feels like an exotic trek through the heat and mystery of Central America, at times leaving the Western world far behind and at other times embracing it. Nothing short of mesmerising.
The Jellies – The Conversation 7”
Finally back in rotation, Emotional Rescue presents is a timeless piece of post-punk wizardry from The Jellies. The Conversation is the sadly (and, we say, wrongly) overlooked B-side to The Jellie’s 1981 release, Jive Baby On A Saturday Night. Based around a simple drum and bass rhythm, interspersed with crowd noise, playful female vocal yelps and sprinkled with dub effects thrown in to the mix and you wouldn’t probably think too much would be going for a track that the band put together in the last two hours of their studio time after Jive Baby had been completed. However, what you get is a killer gem of pop-punk-dub oddness that gets your head nodding to its infectious, repetitive rhythm laden with effects. Don’t miss the Apophenia rework on the flip – a dubbed out but respectful version for DJs and home listeners alike.
Wally Badarou – Back To Scales To Night
A real Balearic masterpiece: Wally Badarou’s Back To Scales is one of true gems of the time. There are few certified music stars that France’s Wally Badarou hasn’t worked with along his illustrious career. Black Uhuru, Grace Jones and Herbie Hancock are just some of the names he’s collaborated with, but the man only got to that stage thanks to his wonderful solo albums of the early ’80s. His unique blend of funk, pop, soul and rock is best heard on second solo album Echoes, home to ‘Chief Inspector’, ‘Hi-Life’ and ‘Mambo’, which was sampled for Massive Attack’s Blue Lines hit ‘Daydreaming’. But for those in the know, his debut Back To Scales To-Night is an unsung classic for its fusion of playful synths, reggae rhythm, and enchanting vocals. Jam after jam.
Susan Phillips – Soft Sexy Soul
‘Soft sexy Soul’ was recorded for Sylvia Robinson’s All Platinum label in 1971, pressed in small quantities. Few copies have ever surfaced, it is so rare that many collectors doubt if it was ever released, it is not listed on Discogs and it has never been recorded as selling on EBay. If an original copy were found today, it would surely sell for a substantial amount of money. The album has that classic early 70’s New Jersey Orchestrated Soul sound. It contains the in demand 2-step single ‘He Knows My Key (is always in the Mailbox)’ , the Northern Soul floater ‘Answer to my Prayer’ , Detroit sounding ‘Please Don’t Keep Me Lonely’ the multi paced ‘Where Do I go From Here’ and many great ballads like ‘He’s Gone’ and ‘This I’ll Guarantee’.
Eramus Hall – Your Love Is My Desire
One of the last great soul albums on the Westbound label finally sees a reissue! Eramus Hall have a vague P-Funk connection – and according to legend, the band were given their name by George Clinton, who had seen a building in Chicago named Eramus Hall – but the sound is a lot smoother than any of the P-Funk projects of the time, and the group’s strongest point is their smooth soul groove, augmented by a tight jazz funk style on the best cuts. In a way, they’re sort of like a morphed version of late Parliament – with a funk sound that’s nicely compressed, but still a lot more true than any of the countless other bands on the market who were aping P-Funk at the time. Highlights include the groovers “Your Love Is My Desire” and “She Shined A Light”, both with nice sample moments – and other tracks include “Stuck In The Mudd”, “Funk Permit”, and “Think Positively”.
Dazzle – Dazzle
MASSIVE! A disco dazzler from the glory days of the De-Lite Records scene – served up here by a group who really hit all the best sort of groove’s you’d expect from that legendary imprint! The album’s a disco record, sure – but it’s also got the deeper roots that come from the De-Lite commitment to earlier 70s funk – co-produced and written by Leroy Burgess and Stan Lucas, both of whom sing on the record – and also get some help from some incredible female vocalists too! Although the cover makes the album look a bit like a throwaway set, the overall quality is very high, and quite soulful – thanks to strong work by Burgess and Patrick Adams, who also does a bit of arrangement – with that ear to the underground that he always had on his best records. Titles include “Reaching”, “Slipped Disco”, “It’s Not The Same”, “Walk Before You Run”, and “All”.
Idris Muhammad – Turn This Mutha Out
Soul Brother’s coming through with the goods again on this Idris Muhammad reissue. His fifth and perhaps most popular of his near-20 LP strong solo discography (that’s not including the epic array of artists he’s worked with from Fats Domino to Art Davis) Ranging from the heavily-sampled stone-cold soul stunner “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This” to silky disco funk such as the album title track and the sleazier “Crab Apple” to the frenetic jazz blasts of tracks such as “Camby Bolongo”, this is the sound of a man fully committed to the craft and spirit of the groove. Nothing short of essential.
Tulalah – The Question
Incredibly talented Melbourne based eight-piece, Tulalah, come forth with their second studio album, The Question. Weaving their broad influences into a unique brand of ‘orchestral folk’, Tulalah strive to create an ever expansive sound, reaching beyond the confines of their instrumentation. Vocal harmonies galore, intertwining guitars, powerful horns; this music will make your realise you had a heart in your chest that you forgot all about. The Question was recorded in a number of spaces throughout Victoria including a family beach house in Blairgowrie and several churches within Melbourne, and these environments come to life throughout the LP’s course. They create a sound that is distinctly Australian. This record is not to be missed.
