Novembers in 3rd gear with this list.
Hi Folks, welcome to the latest big one from Plug 7. 1st though, we gotta say like a lot of you out there we are all feeling the loss of yet another musical hero this year with the passing of Sharon Jones. She was & is a soulful giant for us. I prefer to focus on what she achieved & if you ever listened to her records or got a chance to see her live you know what i mean. Incredible.
This fortnight brings us a step closer to the end of 2016 & another doozy a$$ list. Alongside a big drop of Original presses theres quite a lot of new heat here again, with some heavy want Hip Hop issues, Superb Rocksteady, Ska & Jamaican Jazz from Dubstore, and an amazing array of compilations from Caribbean Soul, South African Boogie, Library Funk, New Orleans Soul…
Up top you can’t go past the killer Jazz & Soul on offer with some great Bobby Womack, Donald Byrd, Coltrane, Weldon Irvine to name just a few.. The Reggae, Hip Hop & Japanese sections also hold quite a few sneaky treasures, but as usual we’re gona keep it brief & let you do some digging.
Come check us out instore for a full 4 crates.. Oh and a box of 45s have made the cut this time with some unusual ones pulled from the New Wave, Doo Wop & 70s/80s soul era’s..
Plz remember we can ship as many records as u want for $10 Australia wide.
And reply to the email or call us to reserve records.

THE DROP.
Papa Chango – The Lost Moon Of Bellaris (Papa Chango)
Continuing the sonic evolution, pushing further out into the vastness of the void, propelling you towards distant unexplored territories. Featuring newest member Nat Grant on vibraphone and percussion, the band have let their ethio-jazz influences flow free and delivered an album that explores the darkness of space and the lightness of life. Once again, texture and form are at the forefront of the release with 8 tracks of cinematic, instrumental badness. Melbourne Local Heater!
V/A – Digital Zandoli (Heavenly Sweetness) $40
Here’s yet another rare ’80s compilation with even more deep cuts than the last. Where do they find them all? Heavenly Sweetness clearly know but they ain’t telling! They are showing though, and here on Digital Zandoli they reveal 12 newly discovered disco, boogie and zouk tracks recorded about 30 years ago in the West Indies. We’re clearly spoilt for choice on this record, but highlights include the synthetic sea breeze grooves of Puzzle Pulsion’s “Mwoin Ka Songe”, the mellow Afro grooves of Zanman’s “Poutchi” and the abstract body music via a sandy beach vibes of OR EA’s “Biguine Inferno”.
Lee Fields & The Expressions – Special Night (Big Crown) $38
“This is a record about what people do in real life,” Lee says.. Special Night discusses an array of “real life” experiences like love, reflected in album’s title track “Special Night,” an emotive sweet melody which finds Fields’ singing to the woman of his dreams. “See I was just a sad and lonely man, living in a lonely world,” he coos on the love track. “Then you came and took my hand, now my prayers have been answered, I’m so glad to be your man.”
This is a return to the baddest of bad soul, this album answers your soul prayers. This is soul music.
Betty Davis – Columbia Years (LITA) $40
Light In the Attic have outdone themselves again with this latest slice of Betty Davis’ most coveted work. Her iconic voice is transported by the legendary productions of, to name a few, Miles Davis, Teo Macero and Herbie Hancock. According to the label, what is special about this release is its pioneering stance on jazz, where across nine songs these greats pretty much already started and finished the free-jazz sound. For the late 1960s, this is some truly special and forward-thinking material; a clear precursor to the mad, improvisational – and often misinterpreted – seminal album by Miles Davis himself, On The Corner. This is mostly unreleased material, and the LP comes with a booklet of interviews and rare photos. Unmissable.
Lee Moses – Time And Place (LITA) $40
Time And Place is a raw soul rarity of the highest order whose cult has continued to grow over the years. Finally properly reissued on deluxe vinyl by LITA with brand new liner notes including interviews with Moses’ sister and his closest collaborator, the singer and guitarist Hermon Hitson. Through them, Moses becomes a little – but just a little – less of an enigma.
V/A – Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas (Tropicalia in Furs) $40
Subtitled ‘Tropicalista Psychedelic Masterpieces 1967-1976’, and collated by the same archivists behind “Psych Funk 101”, “Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas” is a master class for those entranced by the funky, heavy psychedelic wonders of the Tropicalia movement and all that it spawned. But, as the liner notes state, “You won’t find Os Mutantes or their maestro Rogerio Duprat on this compilation. There is a reason that the records contained here have never been reissued… some of the rarest, and best, examples of fuzzy, funky Brazilian psychedelia came out as promo-only 7″ records.”
Josef Weinberger – Big Deal! (Sonorama) $40
Killer funk compilation full of highlights from the music archives of Josef Weinberger Ltd. in London, pulled from the most famous library albums on labels like JW (Josef Weinberger/ Theme Music), IA (Impress) or PM (Programme Music). First selection of 16 lost tracks by Toni Campo, Midas Touch, Trevor Bastow, Sidney Dale or Vick Flick, oscillating between jazz-funk, soul music, proto techno and eastern-tinged disco, with open drum breaks, fat bass lines and plenty of horns/ wah wah/ organs/ vibes/ flutes/ electronic effects. Recorded from the master tapes.
Yussef Kamaal – Black Focus (Brownswood) $50
Yusef Dayes and Kamaal Williams don’t plan much before their live performances. They lay out a chord progression, but beyond that, the pair just vibe, slinking their sound into whatever sonic corners it shifts to organically. That freewheeling approach can be felt on Black Focus, their first album. A jazz record in the spirit of Blue Note’s finest recordings, but this sonic stew incorporates boogie, afrobeat, funk, hip-hop and the spirit of Roy Ayers, too..
UK at the top again from Gilles Petersons Brownswood label.
