LATEST..
30/70 – Elevate (Rhythm Section Int.) $30
As proud as proud can be to see local collective 30/70 taking it international with this release on London’s Rhythm Section. Elevate is a cosmic mélange of boom-bap dynamics, neo-soul harmonies and jazz-funk licks, all steeped in a deep spiritual tradition reaching from Alice Coltrane to Kamasi Washington. Despite their influences coming from across the pacific, the 30/70 sound is unmistakably Melbourne, and we just can’t get enough of it. This one will be flying out the door so if you want it, you’d better get it while it’s hot.

Godtet – S/T (La Sape) $30
The debut LP and live band project from Sydney guitarist, producer and beat-maker Dave Godriguez. It follows the release of  “Take Off” a foot-tapping polyrhythmic groover that effortlessly mixes otherworldly synth, funky guitar and infectious percussion. Gaining attention and praise for his production on “The Great Mixtape” for Sampa the Great, Godtet sees Godriguez stepping back into the live format of production. This is a whirlwind of an LP – a coming together of jazz and dub and everything in between. Well worth the listen!

Nummer – Tribal Trouble (Nummer) $24
French duo Nummer steer their unmatched hardware prowess askew from previous techno outings. Organic polyrhythm dance over celestial pads and twisted effects, a brilliant follow up to this years stellar LP on Going Good.

Palta & Ti – Ep’en Andre Hjem (Gravity Graffiti) $24
Talented Regelbau stalwarts Central and DJ Sports team up as Palta & Ti on impressive up and coming label Gravity Graffiti. After releases from Soichi Terada, Early Sounds’ Whodamanny and Marcello Napoletano, ‘Ep’en Andre Hjem’ sees the Danish brothers team up with a fresh percussive ambient-house EP. This is hot.

Gordon – Erotica Suite (Superfly) $45
Superfly reissue of the rarest LP at cult Strata East label. Reissued for the first time, John Gordon’s ‘Erotica Suite’ is one of the holy grail for deep and spiritual jazz fans, check the superb ‘Neleh’.  A great later label effort under the leadership of trombonist John Gordon, with work by James Spaulding on alto and flute, John Miller on piano and keyboards, Waymond Reed on trumpet, Lyle Atkinson on bass, and Frank Derrick on drums and bells

Nkouri – Percussions (Superfly) $45
Beautiful Superfly reissue of wicked privately pressed Tennessee Modern Soul LP from 1980, check the killer ‘Come Groove With Me’, ‘Since I Met You’ and ‘Music’, all instant classics. Limited to 1000 copies with a classic Japanese obi.

Bobby Jackson – Desiree Song (Superfly) $45
Great from start to finish, this is the kind of record you want to play again and again. You won’t find the name Bobby Jackson in the jazz books. Yet here is a remarkable man who did more than anyone to promote live jazz in his hometown of Minneapolis, risking everything to open a venue for jazz lovers and putting on such luminaries as Freddie Hubbard, Roland Kirk and Elvin Jones. Beautiful quality repress with paste on covers made in Japan, Obi and 180grs vinyl, limited to 1000 copies only

The Descendants Of Mike And Phoebe – A Spirit Speaks (Superfly) $45
Descendants Of Mike And Phoebe’s A Spirit Speaks, originally released in 1974. “This delightfully eclectic LP is an early fusion record combining elements from jazz, gospel, soul and blues. It even has an edge of classical music, to be heard in the clear soprano voice of lead singer A. Grace Lee Mims on several tracks. As such it is a great sign of the times, the early seventies when musical experimentation and coalition was all abound. Bass player and band member Bill Lee would later gain fame as being the father of controversial filmmaker Spike Lee and worked as musical director/conductor on four of his son’s excellent movie soundtracks. For sure you can already hear the early influences here. This is the best sounding reissue of A Spirit Speaks since its original release in 1974 and comes in an exact replica of the great original cover art.” Licensed by Strata-East Records – a must have album for all spiritual jazz fans, including killer tunes such as ‘Coltrane’ and ‘Attica’.

V/A – Le Ethiopique 7” Box Set (Heavenly Sweetness) $88
If you’ve been digging the brilliant Ethiopiques series of compilations, which shine a light on the lesser-known Ethiopian music scene of the 1960s and ’70s, you’ll love this lavishly produced box set. Put together by series founder Francis Falceto, the box boasts fresh pressings of six impossible-to-find 7″ singles and a booklet containing extensive liner notes. The musical treats come thick and fast, quickly jumping between evocative Ethiopian jazz, unique fusions of rhythm and blues and traditional East African styles, Hammond-heavy groovers and exotic dancefloor workouts that defy easy categorization. Given that it would cost you upwards of L600 to buy all of the original singles – assuming you could find them, of course – it’s fair to say that Falceto’s box is a bit of a bargain!
