Hello!
Summer incoming, party wax incoming!
Another big drop this week with heavy jazz and soul goodies. Indeed we are so happy to offer you all the big favourites this time. There’s Pharoah, Ornette, Leon Thomas, Lonnie Smith, Eddie Kendrick, Minnie and hooray look at that Donald Byrd!
We also worked hard on putting together the Japanese, Rock and Hiphop sections for this edition so check it out and let us know if you see any of your dream records in there.
Now, don’t forget to come and say hi to Milly, Lloyd and Jazzy Catlady holding it down at the shop. We have lots of records here!

Jump over and join our Facebook group for more updates as they happen.

Thanks & reply to the email or call us to reserve records.

NEW THINGS

V/A – DJ-Kicks:Motor City Drum Ensemble (K7)
Like the best instalments in the long-running DJ Kicks series, this mix from Motor City Drum Ensemble man Danilo Plessow gives a far better insight into his musical inspirations than his own productions ever could. While there are, naturally, great deep house moments included (Tevo Howard, Mr Fingers, Latecomer etc), these largely take a back seat to Plessow’s other musical passions. So, we get soft-focus electric jazz (Sun Ra), dub wise explorations (Tony Allen, Basic Channel), sweet soul (Peven Everett), dusty afro-funk (Geraldo Pino), urgent leftfield disco (Loose Joints, Walter Gibbons) and even a dash of instrumental jazz-funk (James Mason). That it all makes sense musically, flows brilliantly and is effortlessly entertaining is testament to Plessow’s skill as a DJ.

Victor Assis Brasil – Toca Antonio C Jobim (Far Out)
While names like Azymuth or Marcos Valle have become synonymous with Brazil’s infamous ‘jazz-dance’ scene, it’s really thanks to artists like Victor Assis Brasil that the genre has become such a staple of the enlarged jazz and funk movement. Brasil was a saxophonist in primis, and the best out there at the time; Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim was one of his earlier albums, and it’s striking to hear just how fluid and at the cutting-edge of jazz this man was in 1970. The opener “So Tinha De Sir Com Voce” is a delightfully subtle number, backed by intricate guitars and gentle pianos, while “Wave” heads down a deeper, more pensive tone with the man’s sax on the front lines. “Bonita” is sweet, seductive but still full of zest and Brasil’s inimitable charm on his preferred instrument, and “Dindi” winds the momentum down to a peaceful tempo that bursts with the South American continent’s unmistakable glow. Excellent.

Azymuth – Outubro (Far Out)
The Brazilian jazz-rock band, Azymuth, is noted for its infectious blend of bossa nova melodies, hot samba rhythms, a splash of funk, and a dash of rock and roll. “Outubro” proves to be a winning combination. This spirited ensemble tackles everything from the Flora Purim/Stanley Clarke classic, Light As A Feather (live version), to the electric energy of 500 Miles High, made famous by Chick Corea, to a host of spicy originals by Azymuth leader Jose Roberto Bertrami.
Throughout Outubro, the musicians travel a fine line between technical innovation and the acoustic fury of their Brazilian heritage. Each member of this multi-faceted trio plays a vast array of South American percussion instruments with passion and precision. Synthesizers, vocoders, guitars, and electric bass add fuel to the fire, making it virtually impossible to sit still while listening to the recording. This music is irresistible; it makes you want to get up and dance.

Antonio Adolfo – Viralata (Far Out)
First released in 1979 during the heyday of Brazil’s jazz-funk movement, Antonio Adolfo’s Viralata has long been considered an era-defining release by those who know. Given that original Brazilian copies are frustratingly hard to come by, this official reissue from Far Out Recordings – who previously worked with Adolfo on his 2007 set Destiny – should be an essential purchase for all those who dig Brazilian music. A little more jazz-focused than albums by contemporaries such as Azymuth, much of “Viralata” is slick, polished and incredibly well produced, with notable samba influences amongst the unashamed tributes to leading American artists. As you’d perhaps expect, the musicianship is astonishing.

Delia Derbyshire/Brian Hodgson/David Vorhaus – Electronic
An LP which features music by originally recorded in 1969 by BBC Radiophonic Workshop members such as the late Delia Derbyshire, Brian Hodgson and the American born composer David Vorhaus: who later formed as the experimental electronic band White Noise. It was released by the Standard Music Library label, set up in 1968 by Bucks Music and London Weekend Television who also supplied production music for use in TV, commercials, radio and film. Many of these tracks were also used in the 1960’s cult TV show ‘The Tomorrow People’ and each one has a short description of the music after the track title. Derbyshire and Hodgson assumed pseudonyms in the credits: Li de la Russe & Nikki St. George respectively. Two of the tracks are co-written by the pair, who also worked together on Unit Delta Plus: an organisation and studio project which was extensively involved in the promotion and exploration of electronic music at the time. Legendary stuff!

Freda – Green Dolphins Fly (Moonshoe)
A 14-and-a-half minute neatly knit bundle of beats by Freda from Freda & Jackson. The limited Green tape is the first of the series released by Moonshoe Records from Sydney.
