On to the Drop.
Mariah – Utaka No Hibi (Palto Flats)
Mariah – Utakata No Hibi reissued as a double 12″ set. The long sought after final record on the legendary Better Days label, Utakata No Hibi is the culmination of composer and bandleader Yasuaki Shimizu’s early-80s work, often compared to his contemporaries Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono, as well as experimental new wavers Flying Lizards/David Cunningham, all of whom Shimizu has worked with. Recognized in Japan for the hit, “Shinzo No Tobira,” the entire record is a masterful studio production of Japanese folk and pop idioms filtered through a chamber disco, new wave, synth production, sounding more relevant today than upon its release over 30 years ago. Utakata No Hibi is fully licensed by Nippon Columbia and the Artist, and remastered by Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin. The packaging features additional artwork from Yla Okudaira, who created the original stunning jacket drawings. It also includes a full English translation of the Japanese and Armenian lyrics on the printed inner sleeves.
BB Seaton – Dancing in the Moonlight (Studio One / Jamwax)
Unique Studio one 12” featuring a rework of the Earons 1985 hit ‘Land of Hunger’. Dancing in the moonlight is a rare studio one venture into Disco Boogie Jamaican territory & it’s a cracker. The original fetches at least $300 a pop, so this is a welcome & well mastered reissue to grab at $25.
Paris Smith Quintet – Thought Seeds / 53rd Street Ghost (Jazzagression)
Spanning over three decades, Chicago vibist Paris Smith released privately three albums through his own imprint Oracle records. In the seventies The Quartets album with Kenneth Hill, In the early 80s Thought Seeds with vocalist Carol Sawall and in the mid-90s 53 Street Ghost with full ensemble. All material is self written, the mood, style and feel of three albums are uniquely different. Ranging from full-blown post-bop to soul-jazz slap! The originals are rare and have been demanding three figure sums on the vinyl collectible auction market. The 96 album 53rd St. Ghost gets the vinyl treatment for the first time, previously only available on CD. Each album is carefully remastered, comes with new pictures original liners and new liner notes by Paris smith.Cover illustrations drawn by Carol Sawall. Each album is limited to 500 copies.
Fingers Inc. – Another Side (Alleviated)
Raised on the Southside of Chicago, current Memphis resident (and Alleviated boss) Larry Heard may be best known for the incredibly influential tracks he produced with Robert Owens and Ron Wilson as Fingers Inc. As a hallmark for musicianship within the Chicago house genre, the record, originally issued in 1988 by the UK-based Jack Trax, has until now never been given an official re-release. Alleviated’s reissue spreads Another Side’s 16 tracks, including the classic singles “Can You Feel It” and “Mystery Of Love,” across three LPs.
V/A – French Disco Boogie Sounds 75-84 (Favorite)
Helped by a close connoisseur friend, DJ and collector Charles Maurice presents a fine selection of what he thinks represent best the amazing energy of this specific movement and period. With 10 rare titles, all produced between 1975 and 1984, he shows a perfect picture of what you could find in French record stores at that time;
On one hand, tracks by Overdrive, Marché Noir, Didier Makaga or France-Lise, were produced by underground artists and labels from the French Caribbean and African community and also filled with the raw spirit of this Tropical stamping. On the other hand, tracks by Beckie Bell, Kelly, Le Club, or Bernard Guyvan, were released by major labels such as Trëma, Carrere, Disques Vogue, or Pathé Marconi, thanks to confirmed independent producers, acting not only in France, but also in Canada and the US.
