Mellow Gold is THE Beck album. The one before there were precedents, expectations, or stale influence. An unbridled, almost stream-of-consciousness fever dream of an album, the sheer number of genres on display here is staggering, and yet it all sounds like Beck. He'd never be this musically diverse or lyrically unhinged again. Odelay was the hit and Sea Change was the canonizing "masterpiece", but I'll always prefer the Soul Suckin' Whiskeyclone Blackhole Beck; nothing else has sounded like that before or since. Not even him.
