2LP Vinyl – PFGXX057LP (Smokey Vinyl with Obi Strip)

Back on wax for the 1st time in 21 years, ‘Black Mahogani II’ is a deep Jazz masterpiece, extending its rare pleasures on four cuts, most notably an 18 min canvas for one of his deepest and delirious bedroom jams.

Where its big bro stitched precious, previously released material with new jams, ‘Black Mahogani  II’ served up 33 minutes of exclusive new material intimately defined by a lamplit glow and more jazz-taught tekkerz turned to purring deep house bliss. It is practically worth it for the A-side alone, where KDJ spends nearly 18 minutes putting an imaginary live band thru disciplined paces inside his SP404 and velvet clad studio.

Ticklish jazz hi-hats spritz supple double bass and Fender Rhodes keys in a serpentine wriggler ‘When She Follows’ that unfolds according a singular, captivating logic, with hands on the faders dropping out and fading in the elements as though puppeteering live players deep in a session. It’s a sort of magick that has been oft imitated but rarely bettered, and still held as a benchmark for the deepest strains of jazz-wise house.

That 18 minute of sex music is finely supplemented by the aural equivalent of a post-coital Marlboro Gold in the passage from supine deep house drowse on ‘Rectify’ thru the shuffling ‘Dirty Little Beats’ and muffled pillow talk of ‘When She (Reprise)’, surely channelling the best of Prince and Marvin Gaye thru a Detroit jazz house lens.
