A favorite from the listening bar, Deaf Dumb Blind (Summun Bukmun Umyun)‘s title is taken from verse 18 of Surat al-Baqarah in the Qur’an. “Deaf, dumb and blind as used here does not refer to the physical state, but, instead, to the spiritually handicapped. In other words, Listen but do not hear, Around but not aware, Look but do not see.” Congas, xylophones, shakers, cowbells, and various percussion meet horns and devotional sounds here for a unique combination of African and Latin rhythms with spiritual jazz.
