Howdy from Long Island
Yep Pluggy is in the USA eating pizza, visiting the family & digging thru as much music as is humanly possible.. around eating pizza.
Shio is holding down the shop with our good friend Heidi backing up a few days… & we have compiled a massive list to hold the shop in good stead for the next 2 weeks.
This list has some fantastic brazilian & afro titles, a whole bunch of super clean Japanese rock pressings.. like really amazing presses.. Again some great Jazz titles have appeared, & a decent selection of japanese jazz, funk… & more more..
In the new records section some amazing stuff has dropped. The 2 latest cultures of soul compilations are incredible.. also not on the list but just landed a very welcome reissue from Manuel Gottsching.. Gotta go, A bagel & records literally beckon as I type this.. take care folks.
Remember we can ship as many records as u want for $10 Australia wide.

V/A – Domestic Documents Vol. 1 (NIMH) $35
The first volume in an ongoing series compiled by Butter Sessions and Noise In My Head, Domestic Documents surveys independent artists who are living and producing Electronic abstraction in Australia. Far from a complete guide to the countrys burgeoning scene, the 2LP set presents a cross-section of wide ranging sounds and ideas, travelling the endless highways between Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide as well as regional towns, Ballarat and Keyneton. Featuring exclusive tracks from Daze, Mic Mills, Albrecht LaBrooy, Lucy Cliche and more, the comp also marks the first vinyl outing for newcomers Chiara Kickdrum, Ben Keynes and a fresh Dan White / Ryan Hunter collaboration Turner Street Sound.
A.P.S.D – Digital Dust (Hot Shot) $35
Together Melbourne pair Amin Payne and Sean Deans form APSD, and they debut in quite impressive form with this Digital Dust album for Hot Shot Sounds. Inkswel and Benny Badge’s label has developed into the prime source for what they call “drum machine soul music” and APSD are a perfect fit. Some 11 tracks deep, Digital Dust features contributions from the voice of Fat Freddy’s Drop himself, Joe Dukie, as well as Miles Bonny, Cazeaux OSLO, Silent Jay and more. Yet it’s Deans and Payne’s innate mastery of a glistening brand of funk across various tempos which shines through on this album.
V/A – Boogie Breakdown 1980-1984 (Cultures Of Soul) $45
South Africa is home to a dizzying variety of musical genres and traditions, including some that look directly to American sounds for inspiration. In the late 70s and early 80s, many of the country’s best young musicians were guided by funk. All over the world, disco was growing harder and more electronic, with new synthesizers entering the market every month. The southern tip of Africa was no exception.
Compiled by COS head honcho Deano Sounds in collaboration with Johannesburg-based DJ Okapi from the Afro-Synth blog and record store, Boogie Breakdown serves up two tracks apiece from six seminal acts from the era – Harari, The Cannibals, Neville Nash, Benjamin Ball, Don Laka and Al Etto – to offer a glimpse into this long-forgotten era in African music history.
Benjamin Ball – Flash A Flashlight (Cultures Of Soul) $28
Benjamin Ball’s “Flash A Flashlight” is the first 12” off the Cultures of Soul compilation, Boogie Breakdown – South African Disco 1980 to 1984. Flashlight came out just after Brenda & The Big Dudes’ massive hit “Weekend.” Ball’s unique reggae-tinged synth boogie was nearly as big and became the second bubble gum anthem of the era.
Highly respected house DJ/producer and co-founder of the Running Back label, Gerd Janson gives us two nice edits of “Flash A Flashlight.” Gerd provides two funked up rerubs of the track, one with vocals and one without. Licensed directly from the artist and housed in a custom disco sleeve these edits are only available on the 12”.
V/A – Divine Disco (Cultures Of Soul) American Gospel Disco $45
Greg Belson’s Divine Disco – American Gospel Disco 1974 to 1984 is a snapshot in time encapsulating the raw power of a spiritual performance, set to the pulsating 4/4 rhythms that were in vogue on the dance floors of the day.
This compilation focuses on a breed of Gospel performers that were forward-thinking enough to explore a funkier style; a powerful message with which a younger audience could identify. Music that could stir their mind, body and soul…..while stimulating their senses with a basic need to dance!
Evans Pyramid – Never Gonna Leave You 12” (Cultures Of Soul) $28
The mysterious Evans Pyramid has garnered acclaim from record collectors and DJs alike all over the world including Floating Points, Gilles Peterson, DJ Kon, Soul Clap, Dimitri from Paris, and many others. Deano Sounds tracked down the man behind Evans Pyramid, Andre Evans back in 2012.
“Never Gonna Leave You” is a sublime disco masterpiece inspired by an emotional break up, wine, and Marvin Gaye. “Andre was able to achieve an undeniably unique sound by overdubbing rhythmic guitar parts while using the technique of muting guitar strings.” The B side “Dip Drop” is a left field party jam for the dancefloor with all the bells and whistles. Cultures of Soul Records is proud to officially reissue the Evans Pyramid 12″ housed in a custom full color disco sleeve.
