Hi Folks,
That’s it! We made it through another Melbourne winter. Spring’s the start of new things and heck we’ve sure got some hot new things in here…
We’re loaded up on that Spiritual Jazz tip thanks to some amazing Alice Coltrane reissues (don’t sleep on these!), as well as some old classics back in stock from Be With and Heavenly Sweetness. Odion Livingstone have also come through with the goods on some rare Nigerian psychedelia – these are the reissues you didn’t even know you were waiting for. Plenty of smooth grooves in the secondhand soul and jazzfunk crates – Grover, Lonnie, Otis and Miles to get you started. Don’t miss the rock too – nice, clean OGs galore on lotsa classics.
There’s some real gems in here this fortnight so don’t waste your time. Come through the store for a dig – Ari’s off on another digging trip but Shio, Lloyd and Milly will be holding down the fort.
ENJOY!

Grotto – At Last (Odion Livingstone) $44
Shoutouts to Odion Livingstone for shedding some light on this obscure Nigerian LP and popping the re-issue. Grotto formed as a high school band back in the 70s, a group of 15 and 16 year olds playing around with funky rhythms and psychedelic grooves. While many Nigerian student bands were studio-based projects, Grotto was an active live unit during the ‘70s, playing at The Shrine with Fela, and with Tee Mac at Batakoto amongst others. This first international reissue of Grotto’s debut album comes with a full interview with Soga Benson and producer Odion Iruoje and a selection of rare and previously unseen photos of the band. The album is fully remastered by The Carvery, and it’s nothing short of amazing.
Apples – Mind Twister (Odion Livingstone) $40
Another one from the Odion Livingstone vaults, and likewise from the abundance of musical talent of Lagos’ student bands. As part of the St Gregory’s student band scene in Lagos during the late ‘70s alongside Ofege, Grotto and more, Apples were picked up and produced by legendary EMI Nigeria producer Odion Iruoje who added overdubs to the album at Abbey Road in London with Curved Air keyboardist Francis Monkman. Mind Twister puts forth some deeeep funk. Don’t miss this.
V/A – Beach Diggin’ Vol 5 ((Heavenly Sweetness) $45
Since the Beach Diggin’ compilation series launched a few years back, a number of its obscure, Balearic-minded selections have been given full length reissues of their own. We can probably expect a number of the tracks from this brilliant fifth volume to get the same treatment. As usual, the wide-ranging track list is thick with highlights, from the synth-heavy, French language reggae of Raphael Toine’s 1986 bubbler “Femmes Pays Douces” (taken from the artist’s frustratingly hard to find Ce Ta Ou album) and vibraphone-laden jazz-funk smoothness of Yasuko Agwa’s sought-after “L.A Night”, to the barely-known brilliance of Andre Maria Tole’s Cameroonian gem “Sweet Dole”. In other words, it’s another essential selection.
Byron The Aquarius – Leaving This Planet 12” (Eglo) $23
The Alabama producer Byron The Aquarius after releasing his two records on Sound Signature and Wild Oats, presents us with his first record on Floating Points’ Eglo Records, a four tracks of house jams and freestyle jazz explorations. Perfectly sitting alongside the rest of the Eglo catalogue, we are taken on a journey visiting the worlds of disco, acid and house, while orbiting around the central planet of Jazz.
DangerDoom – Mouse & the Mask: Delux Metalface edition (Lex) $70
More than a decade later, MF Doom and Danger Mouse have revisited their one and only collaborative LP. Twelve years after they came together as the duo DangerDOOM and dropped the project The Mouse And The Mask, MF DOOM and producer Danger Mouse are reissuing a special edition of the project with two new tracks, dubbed Metalface Edition. If you listen to Doom, you expect the ludicrous, and The Mouse and the Mask is his most ludicrous to date. Take a stroll down memory lane with this one.
Alice Coltrane – The Ecstatic Music Of… (Luaka Bop) $50
Truly something spiritual – this LP takes you on the wildest of journeys, through the mind, body and soul of the late Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. There is a prodigious stretch of time between 1967 and 1973 where Alice Coltrane released daunting and spiritual music, that continues to extend beyond the jazz genre. Her penchant for combining blues, bebop, classical, gospel and eastern music compositional styles cannot be limited to one uniform moniker. Pharoah Sanders, Ron Carter. Rasheid Ali, Jack DeJohnette, Cecil McBee, Ben Riley, Reggie Workman and Ben Riley, all contributors during this period, understood and took on the challenge of playing these compositions. Many of these tracks were previously only released on cassette, so big love going out to Lukabop for facilitating such an incredible release.
Miles Davis – Agharta (Music On Vinyl) $45
Remastered and pressed on 180g vinyl, this is some of Davis’ finest work brought back into rotation by Music ON Vinyl. Agharta was recorded on the afternoon in 1975, at one of two concerts Miles Davis performed at the Osaka Festival Hall in Japan. The album has received retrospective acclaim as an important and influential Jazz-Rock record. Its abrasive music and Cosey’s innovative playing influenced a generation of young musicians, including those in the British Jazz scene.
